Am I the only one in the state of Texas who didn't know the symbolism behind this?

Someone gave me a copy of Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, and I passed it to a couple of others. One friend just finished it about a week ago, and when he returned it, I was flipping through, looking at things I'd underlined and the writings he had added to it, which I had encouraged. It was rather interesting to compare notes.

Anyway, some of the quotes that I really liked are below. It's a very good book.

"... I used to be an atheist, which means I didn't believe in things that couldn't be observed ... It's not that I believe in things that can't be observed now, because I don't. It's that I believe that things are extremely complicated."

"Nothing is beautiful and true."

"Grandma said, 'I hope you never love anything as much as I love you.'"

"What were we spending so much time doing if not getting to know each other?"

"You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness."

"When I looked at you, my life made sense. Even the bad things made sense. They were necessary to make you possible."

This is so not something anyone wants to hear about, but I have
The World's Largest Callous
on my foot.

I want to stop the world and fuss over it, but alas, there are things much more worthy of attention.
